A relocatable building is one of those buildings that you can bring to a site and set up in a short time. They are constructed in a modular way such that you only have to put together different sections or you get the whole thing as a complete unit. They are all build in a factory setting so you get speed, quality and uniformity which makes adding other units to them easier (in case you want to expand).
These structures are very versatile and you can get a lot of different uses for them. That is to say depending on the need that you have you can certainly customize one of these structures to suit that need.
Perhaps the common place you get to see these structures is in a construction site. Take a look at any construction site and you will see a long trailer like office that’s elevated off the ground. That’s the modular construction right there.
They act as the main office for the construction foreman and the rest of his staff. From this office they are able to coordinate everything that has to do with the construction – from the actual building to the materials and such.
The relocatable building that is to be the office is typically towed into place since they are usually situated on top of a flatbed truck. If you look closely you might see wheels underneath there. If not then they are hoisted into place using a crane.
When hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans the people that were forced to flee where give the use of emergency shelters in the form of these portable structures on wheels. Hundreds if not thousands of these things were set up in available land areas to accommodate the people made homeless by the flooding.
These portable homes had the simple amenities and could keep people safe and dry. Set up was easy as they were all delivered by tractor trailer and at the end of the emergency they were taken away the same way.
Major events also make use of a relocatable building – lots of it. I’m not talking about events indoors where there are amenities. I’m talking about outdoor events where everything has to be brought into the site.
This could anything from a place to sell food, to an emergency clinic to toilets for the people who will be attending. Building one on the spot doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but simply hiring them for the duration of the event does. They can quickly be put in place so you, as the organizer, can focus on more pressing issues.
Of course you can also use them for storage – something that they are good at. This is helpful if you have to move your things because your building or home is being renovated or something like that.
